L'Agulhas is officially the southernmost village on the African continent.
A 3D relief map of Africa, 30 metres circumference, pays homage to the African continent and the design shows the direction of the compass and includes representation of several African landmarks. It is set against a background where the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans really meet.
Early Portuguese explorers named the area Cabo Das Agulhas ('cape of needles') when they discovered that compass needles show no real deviation between magnetic and true north here.
